You've Been Fired, Now What?

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Losing your job has got to be one of the most stressful events in your life, especially if it was unexpected.

But, traumatic as it may be, it can also present an opportunity to reinvent yourself and chase new passions.

If you’re over 50 and are looking to reinvent yourself after a job loss, there are some first steps you can take to start getting back on track.

Start by reflecting on what you want to achieve and what is important to you. Write down your goals to help clarify your thoughts. Assess your skills and experience, thinking about what you've learned in your previous job and what you could bring to a new position.

Are you thinking about getting back onto the same career path and a different company, or maybe it’s time to follow a new passion? This may be a good time to think about going back to school or finding a job with a company that offers on-the-job training.

Feeling the Entrepreneurial bug? Maybe this is the excuse you need to build your own business and finally live and work the way you choose to.

Building a bridge between your present and future self starts by taking small steps towards your goals, such as updating your resume, networking with colleagues, or researching new job opportunities. Even the smallest steps can help you feel more confident and motivated as you work towards your goals.

Seek out support from friends and family, and surround yourself with positive and like-minded people who can help you stay motivated and focused on your goals. You may also want to consider working with a career counselor or business coach to guide you and hold you accountable.

If you're looking to reinvent yourself after 50, it's essential to learn how to embrace new experiences and push beyond your comfort zone. This will require taking risks and trying things that are unfamiliar to you, so maintaining a sense of curiosity, playfulness, and openness is key.

Reinventing yourself is a difficult and rewarding journey that takes time and patience. Stay positive and committed to your goals, and you'll be well on your way to creating a new future.
