I had a conversation last night with some friends and we were discussing the benefits of coaching. They’re also coaches and consultants, so our discussion was invigorating for me. It’s fun to speak to like-minded people in your industry but I’m often reminded that although many people have heard of coaching. It’s kind of a buzzword these days but not many people truly understand what it is.
Coaching has traditionally been associated with sports. Every top athlete has a coach. In the last few years, coaching has become applicable in every area of business, life as well as sports. It’s quite normal these days for someone to have a coach to help them achieve their goals in life and work.
THE OFFICIAL DEFINITION OF COACHING IS: Coaching is about raising awareness and responsibility to unlock potential and maximize performance. Awareness is created through broadening perspectives and improving the focus of attention, increasing interest, insight, and learning. Coaching increases confidence, self-motivation, and commitment. Awareness and responsibility are states of mind, and the mind is key to high performance.
Knowledge and experience are important for performance, but neither is as important as mindset, which is the level at which performance coaching works. Coaching lifts the focus of attention on strengths, successes, and future possibilities. It leaves behind mistakes and failures and removes judgment, blame, and limiting beliefs.
Whew! All true but that’s REALLY long-winded.
MY MORE BASIC DESCRIPTION IS THIS: My job as a coach is to bring you from where you and your goals are today to where you want to be as quickly as possible while finding ways to overcome obstacles that keep you from achieving those goals.
Coaching supports a person at every level both personally and professionally in becoming who they want to be by building awareness and empowering choices and leading to lasting change.
The coach helps the client to achieve their personal best and to produce the results they want in their personal and professional lives. Coaching ensures the client can give their best, learn and develop in the way they wish. I have one myself!
THE BENEFITS OF COACHING
Working with a coach offers a number of benefits. Regardless of your aims, dedicating time and space to personal/professional development helps to improve confidence and a sense of self-worth.
If you’re feeling lost or unsure about something, coaching can provide clarity, direction, and focus. If you’re struggling to make a change, coaching can help raise your self-awareness and both understand and change certain behaviors.
If you’re finding it difficult to motivate yourself and make things happen in your life or work, coaching can offer accountability and help you define your purpose. And finally, if you simply need to learn a new skill (from sports to building emotional resilience) coaching can help accelerate your learning.
