So, How's Your Career Working Out For You?

Updated: Apr 24, 2023

Let me ask you something. How do you feel about your job? Come on tell me the truth. Your boss isn’t listening.

The numbers vary depending on which expert you talk to but on average, experts claim that 50% of all working Americans enjoy what they do for a living with about 16% of those people saying they “love” what they do. That’s awesome! These people are living their career dream! Congrats!

But what about the other 50%? Why don’t they feel the same? Why do half of all workers feel like, at best, they’re just trying to survive the work week in order to get a break on the weekend?

So, where are you in all this? Do you love your job or career? Like, I can’t wait for the alarm to go off tomorrow morning love? Or are you just doing your time and slogging through the week in order to earn a paycheck and 48 hours to yourself? If that’s you, have you ever asked yourself, why?

According to various polls I’ve researched, there seem to be three primary reasons why people, especially those over the age of 40, continue to work at jobs they hate.

  • Lack of confidence. They took a job in one career out of necessity or because they initially thought this was the job they liked but for some reason it turned sour, but they stay because they feel that they’re not good enough, educated enough, or young enough to get something better.

  • Apathy. Weeks can turn into months and months years while working a job that may not be a dream job but hey, it’s not horrible either. It’s not until you’re attending your retirement party that you realize that you were meant for so much more and missed your chance.

  • Fear. Probably the biggest reason of all. Fear of uncertainty and financial instability often keep people trapped in a job they hate for years. They may have a high-paying job that they can't afford to leave, or they may have financial obligations, such as a mortgage or student loan debt, that require them to stay in their current job. These financial obligations can make it difficult for people to leave a job they hate, even if they know it's not good for their mental or physical health.

As workers we all dance to a different beat. Some people are 9 to 5ers. They love to have a schedule, clock in, do their thing, and clock out. Regular paychecks and scheduled vacations and Christmas parties. Others, myself included, feel suffocated in a career where everything is laid out for them. Personally, I can’t stand the idea of someone telling me when I’m supposed to take my lunch let alone when I get to take my time off. I mean seriously, what do you mean I can’t eat my tuna sandwich at 2:10?

Whatever work style suits you, the important question to answer is “are you happy where you are right now”? If not, know this! No matter your age, how long you’ve done what you do, or have been where you are, it’s never too late to build a career that not only complements your personal goals and lifestyle but makes you want to get up every morning.
